The organizers

SPORT EN TETE

The European association, Sport en Tête is gathers sports associations linked with mental health together.

VADCAR

Sports associations of the Pierre Janet Hospital (carreers in mental health of the Hospital Group of Le Havre). Since 1987, VADCAR, an ergotherapy group has been using the sea as a therapeutic measure for the well-being and the rehabilitation of the mentally ill.

HOSPITAL GROUP OF LE HAVRE

Voiles en Tête

this is the meeting of about twenty psychiatric and socio-medical crews who use sailing as a therapeutic way of integration.
It's an annual regatta which, since 1992, has taken place in HYERES, BENODET, MORLAIX, LA ROCHELLE, and LE CROUESTY.

Voiles en Tête : a challenge

The Voiles en Tête challenge is to enable the mentally ill to take part in classical sports events. By means of a water event, Voiles en Tête permits crews from all over France and other European countries to meet. These crews are composed of nursing staff and patients who come from psychiatric hospitals or

socio-medical centers.

Both sailing and the sea are used as instruments of therapy and social integration.

The sea, the wind, the movement of the boats; all of which can help create a new relationship between a human being and his own body, his corporal feelings.

It is a way for patients to be really active at this meeting : both in exchanges with other crews, and in the running of the boats.

Enjoyment and problems will be shared.

A hospital in the heart of the town

Activities centred on the city

Being the biggest non university hospital of France, the activity of the Hospital Group of Le Havre is based on four sections : short stay, geriatrics, follow-up treatments and rehabilitation of the mental health, where the hospital works for a better integration of the patients.
The Pierre Janet Hospital in the town center deals with adult, the pedopsychiatric units ("Les Jardins de Charcot" and "Raoul Dufy") and permits the continuity of exchanges and the re-establishment of a link with society.
There are as many consultation places for children as for adults which are continuously increasing and setting up in new areas. Our answer to the many sufferings which often lead to mental illness is the establishment of new institutions which are expanding in the town (such as a home for teenagers, a reintegration home, part-time therapeutic accomodation centres, voluntary appartements and community houses).
We believe in multiplying the points of intersection with the town, with those who build it and live in it. We believe in the revival of the social and emotional connections. Therefore, we are hosting 1999's Voiles en Tête which will display both men and women participants on and at sea at their best.

Le Havre, Porte Océane

Le Havre was founded in 1517 by François I on the right shore of the Seine's estuary to correspond with the silting up of Honfleur. The "Porte Océane"which is the most direct European opening towards the World and the first big harbour encountered by ships travelling to the Eastern channel became aware of its true potential as rate as the 19th century.
Bruised by history, destroyed in September 1944 and rebuilt in accordance with the plans of Auguste Perret plans, the rebuilt town is internationally recognized as work of art which proves a will of modernity and innovation. The sea front, the beach and the docks are at the heart of the city : the estuary and the harbour form Le Havre's identity.
A town rich in history which can pride itself on being the first European town having created a Society of Regattas (the S.R.H. in 1838), a sports club : Le Havre Athletic Club (in 1872), and having succeeded in attracting the founder of Impressionnism (Monet, Boudin, Pissaro...).
A town proud of its present situation with a booming university, internationally recognized events (Le Havre Carthagene Race, nautical Euromasters), today accessible by the Normandy Bridge and located in the middle of the major North Europe-Iberian Peninsula.

A town where you'll be warmly welcomed, you can be sure !...

A town worth discovering : Fecamp

Fecamp :

A historic town founded during the Gallo-Roman age, invaded by the Vikings and several times place of residence of the Normandy's dukes.
Fecamp :
City of the Terre-Neuvas and of the "big-fishing" of cod until the beginning of the seventies.

Fecamp :

Seaside and touristic resort, near the higghest Normandy cliff not far from Etretat, about forty kilometers from Le Havre.

Few places you mustn't miss :

* The old abbey : one of the most beautiful Norman monuments of primitive gothic style,

* The Benedictin palace with its museum and old distillery,

* The Terre-Neuvas and fishing museums alongside the sea,

* The pebble beach,

* The casino

* The harbour, welcoming the "Grand Prix des Multicoques" and its skippers.

The town of Fecamp and its public hospital Center, fortified by its eight establishments of which its psychiatric structures (day-time center, CMP, psychiatry contact) are happy to welcome you for the edition of : Voiles en Tête 99

An active sailing week

We have gathered a fleet of sailing-boats from 35 to 41 feet which will compete alternately :
- in regatta (coastal route, olympic triangles) on this very demanding strech of water which is the Seine's bay.
- in nautical rally form which will be aimed less at the search of the best classification than at the maximal involvement of the whole crew in different manoeuvres (lowering of the sail, tacking, steering...) with tests in seamanship, map reading, sea and harbour knowledge.

Organization

In order to preserve the sports, conviviality and security aspects :

- the number of participants is limited to 20 boats.
- each entry will only be officially registered upon the payment of a 6 000 FF instalment. The total entry costs 16 000 FF per boat.
- the crews will have to comply as much as possible with following characteristics:

* at least five patients, workmen or trainees

* a man-woman parity

* a maximum participation to all the navigational manipulations.

An alternative programme will be proposed in case of bad meteorologic conditions.
